Director Ksenia Ratushnaya once said, OUTLAW is about the impossibility of love, referring to the lives of gays and transgender people in Russia. Switching from present-day Moscow to the 1980s Soviet Union, the film portrays two parallel and tragic love stories. One is about the gay teen Nikita, who is secretly in love with the most popular boy in school. The other one is about Nina, a transgender dancer, and her love affair with a Soviet general. And there is the rebellious outlaw, watching the relationships develop. OUTLAW creates provocative and artistic scenes, which are filled with references to famous paintings and books, and demonstrates that real internal freedom can never be obtained through violence.
